So I called Tuesday and spoke with Paula who was extremely helpful and patient with me (a new 'canvas'). I knew what I wanted and explained the significance of it to me... she listened and assured me the shop could accomplish my intended goal. I was able to get in the next day to get seen and inked by Henry Anglas who is the artist I wanted through research. I arrived promptly at 11:00 when they opened and lo and behold Paula is unlocking their door ON TIME. So far, so good. I peruse the downstairs gallery and admire some very interesting art pieces before heading upstairs to meet Henry and see the shop. It is very interesting and a visual experience!!!!! LOVED IT!!! Henry proceeds to show me his rendering and we tweak it accordingly. He actually advised me against my original (what I had thought) idea due to the natural curve of the body, but then explains why it wouldn't look/be as good. He proceeds to fire everything up and get to it. Whole tattoo itself was about 2 hours 50 mins, but whole process was around 4 hours. To me, well worth the trip and the $ seemed reasonable but then again I'm a tattoo virgin so I can't really compare. I went and wanted Henry so price was secondary.... PLUS, anyone ever seen an armored car following a hearse?????!!!

Amazing experiece. At 55, I got my first tattoo and chose Henry Anglas and Last Rites for the work. The shope is over the top cool. Beautiful gallery that changes art installations regularly and a wonderful, mood heavy tattoo shop upstairs. But not your average shop. Great design installation that reflects the dark surrealistic style of it's owner, Paul Booth. Paula runs the shop and was super friendly and helpful. They took great care of me, answered any questions and offered refreshments and snacks throughout the day. All of the artists working there were super nice and made me feel welcome even though I'm a newbie. No attitude, just appreciative attention to the client. The best part was working with Henry Anglas, an amazing and renowned artist around the globe, Henry worked closely with me on the design and made me feel super at home for the entire two days spent there. I admit I don't have experience with other shops, but after going to Last Rites, I can't imagine going anywhere else the next time I'm getting inked.

I had the pleasure of working with the very talented Yomico Moreno on a sleeve. I have nothing but great things to say about the staff, the artists and the experience. Paul Booth ensures your experience is much more then just getting ink. The ambiance and art makes the whole tattoo time very enjoyable. I had to leave for Colorado for a work venture prematurely. Paula opened the studio for me on a Monday to ensure I could get my sleeve finished before my move. Special thanks to Yomico and Paula for being so considerate and working with me!!

I strongly recommend Last Rites. The have an artist for every style. Can't wait to start the second sleeve!!!

I have been getting tattooed by Paul Booth for 20 years!! Paul is one of the coolest most humble tattoo artist I've ever dealt with. I have been too numerous shops and numerous artist throughout the years as I am almost completely covered in a body suit. I just have too say that Last Rites Tattoo is one of the most Professional tattoo art studios I have ever been too. The talented Artists that Paul hand picks are all top notch. You are treated with nothing but respect and professionalism from the moment you enter the shop. Last Rites Tattoo is definitely the coolest tattoo studio I have ever been too and its definitely worth the trip even if your not looking for a tattoo and just want too check out the shop and browse the Art Gallery. A True One Of A Kind Tattoo Studio !!!!!

Just had my cover up done at Last Rites. Years ago I had a back tattoo done at another shop in NJ. It wasn't the greatest.

I reached out to Last Rites and went in for a consult. The design they came up with was perfect for me. Simba knocked it out in two sessions. Last session was yesterday. Came out amazing and I love it. Not many shops are eager to tackle cover ups. I will be back for more Tatt's!

Last Rites is super convenient for NJ folks. 5 mins from Lincoln Tunnel and parking is not an issue.

Paul Booth's Last Rites is awesome!

I have 4 tattoos from this place each one was an incredible experience. I got my tats from Little Dragon and Stephane Alacantara. I've been following Paul's artwork since his tattoo the earth tour, he really is something else. The shop is eye popping the old location had a movie theatre, art gallery, and stained blue glass windows with Ritean skulls. The ambience they create with the burning frankincense and dark ambient music really sets the mood. The tattoos are of highest and best quality in the world.

For paul: I reached out on your FB I'm having problem with your manager mimi. I don't want to discuss

This place is the absolute best. I had Darwin Enriquez recently do my sleeve and it came out amazing. Very friendly staff working at last rites as well. The front desk lady Mimi is awesome and made my scheduling with Darwin who is normally very busy a breeze. I highly recommend this place for anyone who wants an incredible tattoo. All of the artist are amazing here and you will not be disappointed.

Logan Aguilar is my guy. Now and forever!!!!

I have personally used 7 different tattoo artists over the years (some great, some not so much) and have spent years researching artists all over the world as I was finally ready to do something truly special and amazing.

I would not praise someone who sucks or is a jerk.
And I have had plenty of experience with both.
Do yourself a favor and contact Logan if you care about the art and craftsmanship of your tattoo.

We Started with a cover-up, turned into a huge backpiece, now going to be a full body piece.
It is absolutely beautiful. Stunning. I literally have people stop me all the time at the beach, the pool, parties and on the streets. They want to take photos with me and stare at my tattoo so long they get lost in the details. Even those who do not like tattoos tell me that this is far beyond the boundaries of what they have come to expect of the average tattoo/tattoo artist. Logan is uniquely talented.

The tattoo is so vivid people want to touch it because they can't believe it's just ink in skin. They honestly believe they're going to feel the petals of the flowers and the texture of the stain glass rose church window.

There is nothing he can't do. I cannot recommend him highly enough. He can tattoo anything. Anything. And with Coverups he is downright magical. But Every single artist at Last rites makes magic. Each and every one is amazing.

Don't let the dark Goth Hellraiser atmosphere fool you or scare you off. The tattoos they do there are beautiful. All the talent collected in that one room is mind-boggling. You could not find a nicer group of tattoo artists collected in one place every day if you tried.

This is probably the most interesting tattoo studio I've ever been at, so creative from the moment I've stepped in, through the gallery and mental space the owner allowed to other artists to use and to the point you climb up to see the more private Chambers. It is dark and surrounded with mysterious haze.. super liked it.

I finished my half sleeve with logan aguilar just this past month. Last rite Tattoo theatre has a collection of some of the best artists. Logan nailed the realistic roses he placed around the entire length of my arm. Not only is he really talented, he's also one of the nicest human beings you'll ever meet. Logan thanks so much. I can't wait to see all you guys again

It's been three months since I stepped foot in the door it was the best choice I ever made for getting a tattoo here.Ya the place is cool like an evil Castle and ya you are going to pay top dollar for the work but this is a lifetime piece on your body I will never go anywhere different.Cheap tattoos are everywhere works of art are few and I am so proud I saved the extra money and put the art on my arm

Exciting blend of art, mystery, music & talent. Has an edgy gore vibe that makes you feel that you're in a majestic castle in the middle of Budapest. You forget you're in the center of Manhattan the second you enter. I've only met wildly interesting, talented people here. Paul Booth is arguably the world best, sought after tattoo artist, yet the most humble person I know. Hands down my favorite place to be in NY. I'm forever grateful that Paul personally graced my right thigh with the hottest Jimi Hendrix tattoo ever. Extremely impressed.

This place is intense and features some really skilled artists. Expect to pay an insane premium but that comes with a guarantee that the tattoo you recieve here will be of superior quality. I mean if you are willing to put permanent ink into your body, why wouldn't you want a great piece of actual art to be admired.

So I dropped everything and drove here spur of the moment because one of my favorite artists from Chile, South America was in town and guest spot tattooing out of this place. David Jorquera. I sat for 3 hours of tattooing and about 40 minutes of freehand marker rendering and it cost me $1000. On the flip, I took away a killer piece of art and had an amazing experience.

Staff is friendly and decor goes from high end art gallery on the main and second floor to a straight up hell dungeon in the lower floor, where the tattooing takes place. Amazing art and atmosphere, but one complaint was the fact it is nearly 90 degrees as the buildings boiler is nearby.

All in all a great experience but I wish it wasnt so expensive as I would be visiting a lot more! No regrets, highly recommend you check it out if you are in the area and want a killer tattoo !!!

As soon you step in you fall into this odd comfortably dark atmosphere, real creative environment, very skill detailed and high quality tattoos.
Is the right place to go for ink.
There is also the art gallery, very unique and inspiring.
Totally worth it! already got Timothy's and Toxyc's sick works, can't wait for more!!!

I recently had a half sleeve completed by Logan Aguilar. The piece was a black and white depiction of Saint Michael vanquishing Lucifer. I can not speak highly enough about the artwork on my arm.
During our initial consultation, I had given Logan an idea of what I would like on my arm. We then spent some time going over details of placement and different historical paintings that he would use as inspiration.
Logan has a special gift to make something pop out of the artwork and to give a chilling, lifelike quality to it. He was able to blend together multiple pieces of artwork along with his own ideas to give me a true, one of a kind tattoo.
Do not let the dark tones of the shop intimidate you. The first floor is a legit art gallery and each of the employees couldn't be nicer. I personally loved the tattoo area downstairs. Unlike other shops with their clinical white walls and headache inducing fluorescent lights, this place is screaming with character. As for Logan himself, I feel as though he knows my family as much as he knows me. Over the course of my multiple sessions, we spent plenty of time laughing about our children and home lives. I've had multiple pieces done in different shops and not one artist was as friendly and personable as Logan.
As far as the quality of his work, take a look at his portfolio, it speaks for itself. I've gotten complimented more times than I can count on my half sleeve.
I wouldn't consider another artist other than Logan for my future ink.

Had a portrait tattoo done of my twin boys by Jose Contreras it came out better than I had hoped. The quality of artists Paul Booth hires is second to none especially for photo realistic tattoos. I have a ton of shops near me in north Jersey, but none of them came close to the quality of work I saw here. All the artists Jose, Darwin , Logan and Yomico were very friendly and professional. One thing to remember good tattoos are not cheap and cheap tattoos are not good. My tattoo was worth every penny. Remember to tip your artist. I already booked my next session and would recommend to anyone looking for a great tattoo, they do have quite a wait so don't expect to get an appointment right away.

This review is for Logan Aguilar. I had a piece done on my forearm and couldn't be happier. It came out great! He was really attentive to what I was looking for and came up with some great ideas to make it even better. The detail is amazing and I am always getting compliments on it. If you want amazing work, go see him. He has about a 6 month waiting list but it is definitely worth it.

I never got to see the original location, and when the boy told me this was on 38th I didn't know what to expect. But the space is absolutely gorgeous. Three floors of red and black and skulls and light effects and burning frankincense just made me melt. I'd just come here to spend time, the art is a bonus, and it was an amazing bonus. I loved everything I got to see, and going on what I think was opening night meant I got to meet some of the people whose work was being showcased, along with their fans. Great crowd, great atmosphere, I'll be returning.

So I had the pleasure of experiencing what last rite was all about last night. The place is immaculate and everyone is super professional. What really got my attention was the fact that through out the session other artists (not employees ) walked through to admire the shop and work being done. That in itself shows the caliber of the work that comes out if this shop. I'm not just happy with my tattoo I'm grateful I got it done here. Highly recommend thanks guys

Last Rites is your friendly neighbourhood Satanist tattoo shop! Everything is dark and evil in there, including some of the staff, but don't let that scare you. Some of the best tattoo artists in the world work at Last Rites, and it is the home of the very famous Paul Booth.

The only artist I've deemed good enough to work on me so far is Tim Kern, who does the most intricate, beautifully coloured work I've seen. He is a big ol sweetheart with a sick, sick mind. You will want to hug him and give him presents of dead things in jars, and he will make you the happiest tattoo owner on the face of the earth.

Please don't get a shitty tattoo. Go to Last Rites and get it done right.

The shop is a wonderfully brutal assault on the senses. The walls, where they aren't adorned with excellent artwork, are covered with something straight out of the mind of H.R. Geiger. The soundtrack is straight out of hell.

All of the artists are top notch, and Paul Booth is, of course, world famous. I highly recommend Tim Kern. He's got some of the best attention to detail and color work I've ever seen. If you aren't in New York or can't make the trip, you might try to catch one of the Last Rites artists at a convention.

Also, something else you should know about Last Rites... they generally don't do walk-ins.

    ---

edit: Added on 4/18/2007: The shop has moved, and the new address is listed above. It also has an entirely different aesthetic now. It's in a gigantic loft that's now half tattoo parlor and half art gallery. It's really quite an amazing place to get work done.

edit again: Added on 7/19/2007: My artist, Tim Kern, no longer works there. However, it's still the home to some world famous talent.

edited yet again: Added on 9/21/2007: Not only has Tim left, but so has ever other artist working for Paul. I'm not changing my rating, or anything, but I think it's something to note.

I stopped by Last Rites Gallery this evening for the preview of Shawn Barber & Vincent Castiglia's painting show, Anathema. Amazing work! Shawn's masterful oils and Vincent's intense works in blood are sure to delight the thrill-seeker, the fan, and the serious collector alike!

Many know Last Rites as Paul Booth's top-notch tattoo studio, which is well worth a trip in and of itself. Adjoining the studio is Last Rites Gallery; Genevive - the director, and Paul's joint venture. The talented duo curate monthly art shows that feature gorgeous work that explores the marcarbe and darker natures. Anathema's work is challenging, inspiring and well worth the visit!

Great quality work...but waaaay over priced! I have been tattooed by Some of the best and they laugh when I tell them what this shop charges.

If you're searching for a top quality dark style tattoo, you can't go wrong with Last Rites. Paul Booth has an eye for great artists (both on staff and visiting) and it shows in the work. Bonus points for the art gallery and creepy decor.

There is no other place in the world to get a tattoo. At Last Rites you are getting one-of-a-kind custom artwork and the price is more than fair. No one else on Earth tattoos like these guys. I would have my entire body tattooed by any one or all of the artists there.
Beyond the benefit of the highest quality tattoos on the planet is the overall experience. It is like stepping into another world. The darkness and morbid imagery bring a strong, unexpected feeling of inner peace that greatly eases the discomfort of the actual tattooing.

  • *****

Last Rites is both a tattoo studio and an art gallery.
The tattoo artists here are excellent at what they do, but mostly, their work isn't really my style. If you're looking for someone to do horror imagery, however, check out their portfolios. This place is worth travelling for.

I come here for their art openings. They have a different show each month, and specialize in showcasing contemporary artists who work in the dark and/or horror vein. It's definitely worth checking out.

In the past year, they completely renovated/redecorated the space. The gallery area looks very professional, the tattoo studio area is done up in the finest of Hammer Horror Gothic. (If only goth clubs in this city looked like this). They play goth and metal music during events. Whether this is your scene, or you're just doing a Chelsea art crawl, the place is worth a look.

The Finest Body Art Available On The Planet

This is not your ordinary tattoo shop, it is a art studio with more than a few extraordinary people involved in the creation of art in many different mediums. Not the place to go for a "tiny little tattoo".

    Brutally Excellent

I got my very first tattoo at Last Rites this week and it was an awesome experience. I couldn't be happier! I had my work done with Stefano and he was seriously fantastic to work with. He was really nice, easy to get along with, very professional, super-talented and very patient.
I was a little nervous, as I was getting my first tattoo, but he made me feel comfortable from the start with his calm demeanor and professionalism. Obviously your tattoo has to fit your tastes and personality, so we worked through my idea and the sketch he came up with was PERFECT. After doing all of the outlining and shading, I really couldn't believe how incredible it turned out: I love the design, the colors, the exact way in which he placed it.
I would definitely recommend him to anyone. Have Stefano do it if at all possible. If not, you will still receive an excellent tattoo. Extremely professional work, and clearly some of the most talented tattoo artist in NY. I will definitely be going back there for more tattoos in the future!

I have been to Last Rites on two different trips to NYC. I love this place for the professionalism I received from the first phone call I made for a tattoo appointment. The ambiance was very cozy to me & I really appreciated the art work on several walls throughout the studio. Stefano Alcantara is an amazing tattoo artist, can't wait to have more work done from him in the future. Funny and amazingly talented guy! He even recommended a couple of great Peruvian restaurants to visit while in NYC.

I'm writing this review for Tattoo Artist Logan Aguilar.

This is my first yelp review and I also got my first tattoo from Logan. Well first off let me say that he is one of the best tattoo artist in the world. Just check out his website. His work speaks for itself.

As for my personal experience, he was very open minded and easy to talk to. He carefully explains what he's going to do and checks on you to make sure the pain isn't too overwhelming.

I got a half sleeve done and it came out better than I could ever imagine. The colors, the details, truly amazing. People are constantly asking me who I went to for my tattoo. I proudly say Logan Aguilar.

As far as the staff at Last Rites, everybody was very nice and helpful. They always offer me water which is great when you're getting inked.

Hats off to Logan & everyone at Last Rites.

I looked to get some ink done on my arm after my
Friend did it for me (bad idea).so I heard about this guy name Logan Aguilar after I saw his work I thought that only something good will come out of this.no one can mess it more than it is now) so I called ,and decided to come for consultation (it's not close to subway ) but after entering the studio/art gallery and meeting with Logan I felt that this is the place !and this is the artist I want this guy to fix the mess on my arm .(he said that he can rock this one ))
After booking an appointment for 5 hours
Logan was great very much in to the details it took him longer but he was fair and didn't charge me for the time he had to take for himself ,now I'm one month after the job was done my arm healed well the job is great the color are awesome all around (except the lady's hair) I'm sure that he will adjust it the next time I will go there , I will keep you posted so for all of you that looking for some one who loves what he does and really good in his trade , I highly recommend Logan Aguilar he is rock star !!!

So i just got my tattoo done by Logan this past Tuesday, and i am in love with the results.

They have just moved to a new location, 325 West 38 Street, which is really cool because now the gallery is a store front and can be seen by passerby- the tattoo studio is downstairs. It's very dimly lit, except for some red lighting and there is some really awesome artwork down here. The shop is really clean and everyone is really nice.

Logan did a black and gray portrait of my grandmother on my forearm, and it looks exactly like the photo i gave him. If you want a portrait done that actually looks like the person, this is the guy to go to, you won't be disappointed.

Terrible place to get a pizza, but great place to see contemporary art that makes sense. The atmosphere is consistently dark and beautiful from top to bottom. The people that work there are all super nice. Paul Booth is nothing but cool. I am biased because I show my art there and Paul has got his art all over my arm. But hey, why would I show my art at a gallery that sucks or spend hours of pain getting a tattoo from someone I don't like?
